Every pet deserves a loving home, and at Marmoset Sadly, scams involving exotic animals—especially marmoset monkeys—are increasingly common online. At TheThreeWiseMonkeyLLC, we care not only about the animals but also about protecting potential buyers from fraudulent activity. Here’s how you can stay safe and make informed, secure decisions when looking for your new companion:
Scammers often advertise monkeys at unusually low prices (e.g., “$500 with free shipping”) to lure buyers. A healthy, well-cared-for marmoset monkey from a licensed breeder typically costs between $3,500 and $8,000. Prices significantly below this range are a major red flag.
Most reputable breeders, including backyard hobby breeders, price marmoset monkeys in the $3,500 to $8,000 range. Lower prices may indicate scams, illegal breeders, or poorly cared-for animals.
Legitimate breeders and businesses will never ask you to pay via untraceable methods like:
• Gift cards (Amazon, Apple, etc.)
• Western Union or MoneyGram
• Cryptocurrency
Only use secure, verifiable payment methods and request a written invoice or contract.
In the U.S., all legitimate exotic animal breeders and transporters must be USDA licensed. Ask for the breeder’s USDA Information or license number and verify it through the USDA Animal Welfare Act (AWA) database. If they refuse to provide it, walk away.
In addition to checking USDA credentials, you should verify the seller’s business or facility with your state’s agricultural or wildlife department. Many states require breeders to be registered or inspected. A quick call or online check can save you from a costly mistake.
Scammers often steal photos and videos from real breeders. Always ask for:
• A current video of the monkey you’re considering
• A live video call showing the animal and the seller
• Proof that the seller is physically in possession of the animal
⚠️ A phone call alone is not enough to verify legitimacy. Scammers often use fake names, burner phones, or false accents to appear credible.
Look for customer reviews, business registration, and proof of legal operation. Check with exotic animal forums, Facebook groups, or other breeders to verify the seller’s credibility. Be wary of sellers who operate only through social media or classified ads with no real business presence.
If you ever have doubts about a breeder or seller, contact us directly. We’re happy to point you in the right direction—even if you don’t buy from us.
Protect yourself. Protect the animals. Know the signs.
